Book Review: Siege and Storm

Curling up with a sequel is like ... well, actually, I don't like sequels. No matter how good the first book was, unless you are starting the sequel the moment you finish the first book, you start out feeling a bit lost. I it is like trying to recall a dream. I know these people, what was their story again? What were the emotions this ended on? Sigh. 

Lucky for me, I blogged about Shadow and Bone, so if you also need a refresher, you can read that (I did, it was helpful). 

Let me walk you through the first chapter. Here is Alina, boarding on feeling sorry for herself and leaving work. There is Mal, looking as delicious as ever (as EVERYONE has noticed), but he only has eyes for one girl. I feel back in step with this novel with only a mere misstep at the beginning. However, in a less than twenty pages the book takes off, the Darkling is back, there will be no happy Alina and Mal chapters. Not only do I already dislike the Darkling, but he is back with new tricks.

Well, Leigh Bardugo certianly knows how to suck me into a book. I finished the first title in under 24 hours, but I think this one will take longer (I did have to go to work today, after all). Wowza, what a story though!

August 6th

Ummmm, you know how Mal is awesome? Maybe this other guy is slowly gaining ground on Mal. I mean, he is pretty awesome and princely and has more emotional depth than Mal (or maybe I just like him more). He is charming and wonderful. 

Other than that guy - the book has taken so many twists and turns that I'm surprised I got any sleep last night. It is wonderful and exciting and I'm going to go keep reading. I'll post the finished review tomorrow! (I can finish as soon as I'm done with this rerun of Gossip Girl!)

You know how Blair originally loved Nate, but she actually belonged with Chuck (keep up, I'm on a Gossip Girl kick) -- that is sort of how I feel right now about Alina, Mal, and the Prince. Sigh.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover. But I did. This book is pretty much nothing like what I thought it was going to be. I'm not sure what I thought it was going to be like, but it is a teenage angst story about Billy, her mother, and her grandmother, their stories told in alternating chapters. The story is interesting so far and I almost feel sorry for Billy, but is she a little one sided? Is she a little bland? Do I care what happens with the story? I haven't decided yet. 

August 5

This was a short, quick read. It went from being a story about Billie, an unhappy teenager with a classically messed up family, to a web of lies spanning three generations. Nothing is what I expected with this book. I wish that Nadin would have fleshed out the last third of the book a little and focused on how the characters FELT rather than just a recount of the action. However, the book is a great read, quick and poignant. 

Book Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone

I can't believe I'm even breaking from reading to write this review (except it is easier to type and eat dinner than read and eat dinner). This book -- wowza. I was enchanted from the first page. It has won tons of awards so far, so I shouldn't have been surprised (but then again, everyone loves The Great Gatsby and I had to suffer through the terrible thing, so I usually don't take people's opinions as fact).

Karou (which I'm pronouncing Ka-roo, but have no idea if it's right) is living in Prague, has just broken up with a self-centered narcissist, and has a pretty loyal friend (Zuzana). She is going to art school, has 94 sketch books that she has filled throughout her life, and everything about her past seems pretty shaded ... for about the first 70 pages.

Then as we start to find out what has actually been going on in Karou's life, the reader (i.e. you and I) are sent through a whirlwind of adventure. I have had to re-read sections to figure out if I'm missing things. Just hold on, things are bound to get better and clearer!

Lastly, there is this Angel guy. Is he good? Is he evil? Tell me he is Karou's love interest for the book because he sounds delicious.

Last night, around 10:00pm I posted the following on Facebook.

Well, finishing the book won out ... I just couldn't put it away knowing I was so close to finding out what was going on. 

This book has so many layers, just when you think you know what is going to happen, Ms. Taylor pulls the rug from under your feet and you realize you didn't know what was going on after all. I love that. Although the love interest was maybe a little predictable, it was held out for so long I found myself holding my breath. 

Page 305 ... the last page of chapter 42. I found myself holding my breath, unsure of what I hoped the next page would say, fearing turning the page of a book. At this point I was not sure what I even wanted to happen. I waited a full five minutes thinking about it, re-reading the previous pages, wondering what could make it okay. Leading up to this point had been amazing ...

This book is a roller coaster of emotions and you are never sure what you are hoping for. The ending, well I wouldn't have ended it any other way, I love when it isn't tied up in a neat bow. This just means that the beginning of Days of Blood and Starlight is going to be amazing. 

Pick up this book and you won't regret it.

My First Video Review

Sneak Peak is a fun YA program at my library where the new books are all brought out at one time, red carpet style, with book talks as the entertainment. This year our super YA librarian, Joan, wanted to intermix some media into the program and asked me to film myself.

Book Review: Dance of Shadows

I read this without following my typical review format - so I thought I'd include my book talk on this here instead. This is a sneak peak because I won't give my book talk for a few more days.

The New York Ballet Academy. Dancers spend years dreaming of what it would be like to attend. They admit the most dedicated, talented, and graceful dancers each year. That was my sister – Margaret was amazing and dedicated and passionate. Which is why I know she didn’t run away like everyone has said. It is my turn to go, I’ve been admitted and it isn’t my passion for dance that brought me – but my dedication for finding my sister.

Before I can start looking I’m pulled out of bed in the middle of the night for what I thought was a hazing. The masked dancers hold out a scalpel that we are to slice into our own feet and drag a line of blood across the practice hall floor.

Barefoot, I stepped forward. The upperclassmen closed in around me, chanting in English. You’re not good enough. You’re not worthy. The words came out low and muggy through their masks. You will never be a dancer.

They’re right, I thought, searching their hollow faces. I gripped the knife and slashed the ball of my foot. The chanting grows louder all around me, words now in French that I do not understand. They grow louder, louder, until the words pounded through my head.

Later I discover their meaning, “Run Away, Flee for your life. Save your soul.”

Only a few days later my friend goes missing. A boy who is equal parts mysterious and dreamy starts seeking me out. Our instructor goes from demanding to sadistic. I’m cast in a lead role that seems cursed. First my sister, now my friend, maybe others have disappeared too - and instead of saving them, I might be next.

Book Review: Sisters Red

This is one of the books I'll be book talking at an upcoming YA program. I totally "judged books by the cover" when I picked out my two books I was totally attracted to the covers. However, beyond the cover, Little Red Riding Hood is my favorite Grimm tale. It is dark and delightful. 

On to the book. It starts out with young Rosie and Scarlett March. Their grandmother is attacked (shocking), but on a delightful turn, a man doesn't show up to save them (Joseph Gordon-Levitt would approve). Now onto adulthood Scarlett carries the physical scars and Rosie carries the emotional burden as they band together with the help of  Scarlett's only friend, Silas, to fight the Fenris. 

Here are some problems: First, their names. Scarlett and Rosie? That is a little heavy handed with the red metaphor I think - couldn't one of their names been a French version of this? They are the March sisters, which in the literary world should only refer to the Little Women. Scarlett is covered with scars? That was just bad planning. The second problem? The pretty shallow development of Rosie's feelings toward Silas. Okay, so she likes the boy and knows she shouldn't. Now what? This has been going on for 147 pages now. Make a move or move on. 

New Graphic Novels

I've said it before, I'm not a graphic novel fan. However, as the collection developer for the graphic novel section at my library, I'm learning a lot. Additionally, I'm finding some things I really like.

First up, Hildafolk by Luke Pearson

You know how people (um, librarians?) are always saying you can't judge a book by its cover? Well, that should probably be that you "shouldn't" judge a book by its cover, because you totally can - and I do, often!

Hilda was so adorable with her bluish hair that I couldn't pass her up. However, not having done any research I didn't realize that this is book two, book one is Hilda and the Midnight Giant. There is also Hilda and the Bird Parade ... both of which I'll be ordering soon because this is a sweet book.

A mere 12 pages to tell an enchanting story about a girl and her adventures. Well, Pearson pulls it off. Between her desire to be cozy, her adoration of trolls, and the excellent artwork this story is one to read and re-read.

Struggling readers will enjoy the brevity of the story. Graphic art snobs will love Pearson's work, and anyone who likes a folky-fairy tale will be captivated by Hilda and Twig (a trusty sidekick). 

The publisher, who I gave some credit to above, hosts the 17x24 project, of which the Hilda series is a part, where up and coming graphic novelists can publish in a cost effective format. See more information on their website. 

Cardboard by Doug TenNapal

Cardboard was a book I picked up on a whim and decided to read. I had ordered it for the library and it had some great reviews. I decided to see what all the "fuss" was about. Now, this isn't my favorite art style and this adventure story isn't what I typically read. But this was fun and made me see why kids love a graphic novel. I liked figuring part of the story out for myself. 

When I'm reading in Story Time, I'm really picky about the kind of picture books I present. I like them to be witty and poignant, but they have to have EXCELLENT illustrations. Not art, not elaborate paintings, but great art! Great art is where part of the story is told in the picture. That is what a graphic novel does and I really saw that here.

The reason graphic novels are perfect for struggling readers is because they help to develop reading skills and interest, but they also promote reading comprehension in ways that I'm not sure teachers always understand.

I loved this story about a father and son and their adventures trying to make life happy for themselves. I'm not the only one, evidentially Tobey Maguire, Chris Wedge, and Fox Animation are interested in the book as well!

The Secret of Stone Frog by David Nytra

This book is a part of the "Toon Graphic Novel" series and is the reason I ordered it. Well, actually I read two different reviews that said if you liked Alice in Wonderland you'll love this. Seriously? Didn't I already face that disappointment in Coraline? When will I learn that nothing holds a candle to Alice?

Deep breath, vent over.

The illustrations remind me of The Littlest Prince and aren't something I cared for. However, the story captured me within the first few frames ... and then disappointment strikes. This isn't a story for Alice in Wonderland lovers - it is Alice in Wonderland. It is a cheep knock-off. Lost in a new land, strange creatures telling them which way to go, giant flowers, a huge headed evil woman, bee warriors rather than Card soldiers, talking animals, and magical rabbits and silly rhymes ... I could go on. 

In the end, I liked the book (didn't see that coming did you). The illustration style wasn't my favorite and the story has so many similarities to Alice that I was surprised it wasn't called Wonderland and the author didn't say Carroll was his favorite. However, the story was sweet and enchanting. Good enough for a second read I think.

Two things. First, I haven't read a book in over a month. Second, anything Little Red Riding Hood related catches my attention. Wait, three things, third - I really, really, loved Cinder (it was my first review here on Lizz the Librarian!)

I started the story to be slightly disappointed that Cinder wasn't a part of the first chapter or two, but I so quickly loved Scarlet's character that I when Cinder did have a chapter, I found myself impatiently awaiting Scarlet's return. 

The character of "Wolf" (the name is totally heavy handed) was charming before we even meet him. Emile's description made me instantly want him to be the love interest of Scarlet. Laughably I was only about twenty pages into the book. However, YA books aren't known for their deep and unpredictable plot lines.

Here is the thing I love about YA fiction - there is this tease that is so much better than the real thing. You know how two characters can spend five pages building up to that perfect moment ... and then it doesn't happen? Well, that is much better than the first kiss, every time!

I was anxious to get off work and home to my book. That is almost a joke, except I'm totally serious. The ending was perfect! The characters, after spending so much time not doing what I wanted them to do, finally came around and made me happy. Meyer has really intrigued me with her fairytale turned dystopian YA novel style and I am so anxious for the last book in this series that I friended the series on Facebook for some more information. Turns out the next book doesn't come out until 2014 and is entitled "Cress". The brief description on GoodReads says that it will be about Cinder and Rapunzel. Um, excuse me? What about Scarlet? What about Wolf? What about the characters I'm REALLY involved with right now???? 

This isn't the best book trailer, and the guy's voice isn't deep enough for a voice over, but here ya go!

Character Review (minor spoilers, but not plot spoilers)::

Scarlet: This girl is no nonsense! She isn't going to let anyone push her around. She knows her name is heavy handed because of her red hair and she wears a ratty red hoodie her grandmother gave her. I wish that red hoodie had played into the story a little, but it didn't. Her grandmother is missing and she still continues on with life until a man who is unlike anything else falls into it. I felt that Scarlet went from naive to not so naive really quickly, but since I'm not quite sure about her age, maybe this was a natural progression.

Wolf: I'm fanning myself as I write about him. The man is shy, sweet, strong, and sexy. His animal instincts are pretty much the only thing that can scare Scarlet. Now, before this starts sounding like a Harlequin Romance Novel, let me just say that this book is all about the tease. In 400 and something pages there is a total of three kisses from any character pairing. But Wolf, I wouldn't mind him feeling the need to save me at any point in time. I loved how Meyer was able to balance the animal instincts with his innate tenderness. He was sweet and terrifying all at the same time.

Cinder: The girl is back and she is not going to let anyone keep her down. After escaping from prison (obviously she wasn't going to spend the whole book in a prison cell) she goes on a hero's mission with a half-pathetic accomplice in tow. I love how human she is, how she is loyal to her friends and wants to maintain her humanity, even though she knows it wasn't ever there to begin with. Although 65% of the book is dedicated to Scarlet and Wolf, Cinder's story moves along seamlessly. 

Thorne: First, his name is Thorne, which makes me thing that he has to be Sleeping Beauty's Prince Charming. However, Sleeping Beauty doesn't even have a book announced, so I may be wrong. Well, Cinder stumbles across him while trying to escape prison, interrupting his perusal of inappropriate pictures. Even though he is winey and overly confident (I'm being nice here), he really does help Cinder in ways that she couldn't have done without. One review describes him as her Han Solo and I think that is pretty apt. A girl as strong as Cinder (or Princess Leia) can balance out a guy like this. Unlike Han Solo, Thorne doesn't make a move, leaving our current Cinder/Kai pairing intact. 

Kai: This Prince, excuse me, Emperor, is a huge disappointment in this whole story. Doesn't he remember Cinder at all? He barely seems conflicted when ordering her recapture, is disappointed when they can't turn her over to the Lunars, then he seems to just give up on everything he once stood for. He isn't winey like Thorne, he is just pathetic and weak. Even though I loved their story in the first book, I find myself hoping that Cinder falls for Throne instead. 

Thorne cracks me up in his picture ... and I imagined Scarlet's hair longer ...

Book Review: The Blessed

I picked this up on a whim, the cover was intriguing and a friend of mine (also the YA librarian at my library) said she hadn't read it yet and wanted to know what it was about. I added it to the already giant pile of books I was checking out to give it a try. 

The premise is strange, at least, I think it is strange, I am 70 pages in and still not really sure what is going on. However, it did grab my attention from the very first page. 

What I know: There are three girls who truely need someone to do an intervention in their lives (where I beleive this is probably heading). I like the girls for how unlikeable they are. It is hard to write about a character who isn't perfect and whose flaws are right there, on the surface, while building something else below. So far, 70 ages in, I'm really liking each of the girls.

What I need: I need something to happen! I mean, 70 pages in and I still don't know what is going on? According to Good Reads I'm 17% through the book. Okay, that doesn't seem like that much. But I just want to know, who is Sebastian? 

Book Review: Coraline

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Book Review: 

Shhhh, don't tell! But I had never read Coraline all the way through before. Did I see the movie? Yep. Did I think I had read the whole thing? Yep. But the ending was a surprise for me!

The Good:

Coraline is a strong girl (nothing like Little Red Riding Hood, who I am researching right now) who does not need a hero, she is the hero! Her life is like your life (or your childhood life), she is bored, curious, and stuck in a house all alone (well, her parents are there). Her parents cook food she doesn't like, don't have time for her, and she has just moved. I love how strong Coraline is! When she first looks under the bed at the rats, I wouldn't have gotten any closer to those glowing red eyes!

The Not-So-Good:

Coraline is billed as the Alice in Wonderland of this generation. I don't mean to be rude, but I like to think that Alice is Wonderland is the Alice in Wonderland of this generation. Holding it up to such a high standard makes it fall a little flat. Now, this isn't some great literary work, so I understand that it isn't very multilayered, but at the end I really wanted Coraline to demand a little more of her parents. However, this features a bit of a non-ending that reminded me of Where the Wild Things Are (which is fantastic, don't get me wrong).

Over-All:

Should you read this book? Yes, because it is a modern classic. Not many people are writing Fairy Tale stories anymore and this is a great one. Who should read it? Well, sad to say, I'm an adult (but I loved this book) so I think anyone adults and below would really enjoy it. I would like to note that it is a little scary, and maybe even a little creepy, so maybe third grade and up is a good age range.

What I'm Doing With It:

After a very democratic voting process in the After School Program I do outreach from my library at, the kids chose to hear Coraline read aloud. These third through fourth graders are usually chatting, hitting, and moving around - but now, Coraline has settled them right down. This is really a great read aloud book!

Book Review: Incarnate

Sometimes we do judge the book by its cover ... this is especially true of Incarnate by Jodi Meadows. The cover is intriguing and pulls you in. Is that a mask she is wearing? Is she part butterfly? 

 

November 4th 

I pick up this book and I am not sure what I'm expecting. I had read a review forever ago and put it on my "to be read" list and forgot about it. Well, after it made the rounds and my library hold came up I checked it out ... and then had to renew it because I wasn't getting to it. 

After NaNoWriMo ended, I don't want to start editing, I needed a break from my characters and so I'm soaking up other ones. 

Three Things I Like:

1. Totally new premise

2. Ana is both strong, weak, and naive at the same time - which makes her interesting

3. I like that parts of the plot are hidden without making you crazy. It is a sneaky whispered conversation here and a question there.

Three Things I Don't Like:

1. I don't like how Li has so much control over everything - she sucks

2. I don't like how confusing Sam's character is - he is Hot/Cold, Good/Bad ... I'm 2/3 of the way through the book and I like him less and less. I like his relationship with Ana and Seph - but I just don't really understand him.

3. I'd like more about their world. Ana had all these questions at the beginning and she has been doing all this research - what are the answers?

Book Review: Shadow and Bone

This book was already on my list of "to-reads" when it came into the library. But it was put in the children's department and I was confused. Is this a children's book or YA fiction? What are the differences? 

Well, as a fairly judgmental person, I was like, do I want to read this now I know it is a kid's book? Totally glad I picked it up anyway, I'm really not sure it is in the right section. Oh well, let's discuss this in the discussion comments.

November 26th

(I'd just like to point out it is my birthday and it is always so funny writing that date)

As I mentioned I didn't have a lot of faith in this book to be fantastic. However, I started it last night after I reached 43753 words in my NaNoWriMo goal :) ... the book is fantastic (this one, not the one I'm writing, I'm not sure about that one yet)!! From the first pages to page 167 (which is as far as I read last night), I'm on the edge of my seat! 

Things I want to know

1. I want to know what happened that first day in the "Before"

2. Where did the scar come from (see above?)

3. What does The Darkling look like, I mean, really look like

Things I love

1. That Alina is honest with her feelings

2. That The Darking feels like he is right in between Anikin and Darth. 

3. That it is suddenly trendy to make non-beautiful female protagonists :)

November 26th - continued

So, I finished the book in a 24 hour period of time - that is how captivating this book is.

Things I Know

1. The prologue "after" sucked, what was that all about? That does not make me excited to read the next book. That sounded dull. Everything was tied up in such a neat little package.

2. That Mal is pretty awesome and totally a teenaged boy

3. That this is a totally unique storyline, nothing is like this - but it is fantastic.

Why I Want to Read the Next Book

1. Obviously I need to see what happens to both Mal and Alina.

2. I want to know the Darkling's name

3. Does light win over darkness?

New Read: The Crown of Embers

Okay, so I'm a librarian with no time to read - it really is shameful. I mean, I do read. I read picture books and hi-lo all day long. But to sit down and curl up with a great book, nope, not time for that. 

However, give me a really great book. I mean a REALLY great book, and I can't ignore it for long. I actually got this one almost two weeks ago, right when NaNoWriMo started. I decided I couldn't start reading it yet because I needed to focus on writing, not reading. 

Deep breath. I couldn't ignore it forever - plus I'm doing great on my word count - so I deserved a reward and this is such a great one!

If you haven't read book one, reading my review for book 2 will give so much away. Don't take this great adventure away from yourself, go get The Girl of Fire and Thorns now!

 The Crown on Embers

You'll remember that I devoured the first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, in a matter of moments. Elisa is the perfect character. She has Hermione and Katniss in her - plus some spunk of her own (this is a massive complement from me, by the way, no one is as awesome as those two girls and Elisa is a mix!). 

You'll be able to look at my reading list and notice that I don't like sequels. They are dull, unimaginative. The good stuff was the first story and everything else is extra now. This book, this book is nothing like that. From the first page I was pulled back into Elisa's world.

November 21st

I started this book over breakfast, bad plan, my cereal was completely soggy by the time I remembered it. Elisa is home and safe. It is her birthday - seventeen (did a whole year pass in the last book? nope, it has been about five months) and that deserves a parade. Trust me, Hector is concerned about her safety (awww ... heart him!) and he has every right to be, because in the first couple of pages they are attacked. Of course, and the excitement only starts there. 

The big news? Well, she might be queen, but even her council doesn't respect this from her. Instead they suggest she either step down or ... get married. They are drawing up a list of possible candidates. Bet you know who I want to be on that list :)

November 25th

I actually finished this yesterday, but maybe my shock was too much to write a blog post. I now remember why I didn't pick up the book - it is memorizing and hard to put down. I didn't take it with me on Thanksgiving to my family dinner because I didn't want to be "that girl" whose nose was in a book the whole time. Excitement on every turn, things that break your heart and things that make your heart smile.
1. I totally love Hector more than ever, especially after the beach!
2. Elisa is the strongest person I know, I'd be curing up in a ball and crying right now!
3. This book couldn't have ended better.
4. I seriously cannot wait for the second book to come out, Rae Carson, how do I get an advanced copy???? I'm dying over here!!

Book Review: Insurgent

GUESS WHAT I STARTED?!?!?! I guess it isn't that much of a guessing game since I've already told you ... but I am SO excited!!

September 23

So since I was kinda having a sick day today (why are people so nice and share every illness under the sun with me? I seriously need some vitamins!), I had plenty of time to do laundry and start a new book!! I was so excited when this one came in and I had (accidentally) forgotten about it while I was moving. Since I decided I couldn't check anything else out until I finished what I had at home ... I grabbed this one when I saw it!

Here is another great sequel that starts right where the other book ended. However, I could have used a second of review because there was a member of their party I don't remember being there. Nevertheless, the book has started well! I'm so glad that Tris' brother is with her right now! Four/Tobias is as fabulous as I remember him and they are all in a heap of trouble, although I don't "feel" like they are. I think it is because we left off in the middle of the action and it will take a second to get back into it. But, as always, I'll let you know how it goes!

October 18th

I know, no excuses on the delay here. This book just isn't quite as captivating as the first. There is, of course, a complicated plot line and no one seems to know who they should be trusting - everyone seems so suspicious. The walls of communication seem to crumble around Tris and Four/Tobias. Although they seem to have just revealed huge secrets, why they hadn't told each other before is something that isn't quite clear. Plus, I would have liked to have seen some anger toward each other. That might be coming, so I'll wait. Right now the plot is just kinda dredging along and, although things are happening, it doesn't seem like it matters that much to the story. We will see ...

October 24th

What is it about this book that I just can't seem to get through? I'm finally over half way through, but it is a struggle to sit down and read it. I don't understand why I pick up the first book of a series and devour it in a matter of hours - but I'm not enjoying the second book. Divergent is on my top ten list this year (await the full list!!), but this one ... I'm too impatient and I care more about the characters then the story itself and this book is focused more on the action (I guess that is me answering my question).

I was gleeful to begin a new book this morning. Since I've been moving and staring a new job, I haven't had much free read time. However, this morning my computer needed to run an update, so instead of checking my email over breakfast, I started a new book - it as just the push I needed really, so thanks Apple for the update :)

Now I'm on break at work (they are pretty serious about them here) and I went to grab my book only to realize, I didn't grab it this morning!!! This is good for you because you get an update, which I've also been slacking off on, but I want to know want is happening!!!

September 20

I love that this story literally picked up right where Abandon left off. I hate it when there is a huge review ... I already read the first book, I don't need a summary of everything that happened. The book hooks you in from the moment you start reading and that is why I'm so upset that I don't have it here right now to read it!!

Alas, I'm sure I'll have more to post shortly, as soon as I get home for lunch and can get some more reading in! I cannot believe I left my book home!

I went home for my book at lunch, thank goodness I now only live 2 blocks from work :) and I was able to get some reading in. We might call it the "Persepohonie" myth, but for Pierce it is all too real. I'm not into the book 50 pages yet and Pierce did something to keep herself in the underworld forever! The poor girl is depressed, frustrated, and is on the emotional roller coaster of her life. Not to mention she is still fighting for her life since the Furies would kill her just to hurt John.

September 21

This morning I'm so sleepy, why you ask? Because I stayed up too late reading! You know how, "I'll read one chapter" ends up reading until the book is falling onto your face? Well, that was my night last night.

Normally when only a day has passed since the start of the book and I'm halfway through, I'm frustrated -- but so much is happening in a day to Pierce and John that you really aren't bored. Jumping back and forth between "our world" and the "underworld" can seem exhausting, but how do you imagine Pierce feels? There is so much going on in the Underworld and I'm excited to see how they have tried to make their lives "normal-ish" down there.

Okay, I have to go, running late to work ... hopefully I'll finish tonight :)

Dear Meg Cabot,

I truly enjoy the characters and the world that is the Abandon Trilogy. However, we need to talk. I'm anxiously reading away and suddenly the book just ends ... it just ENDED! No warning, right in the middle of the excitement! How could you do this to me!!!

For everyone else - the book is obviously excellent and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. However, it really does fall off in a true cliff hanger moment!! There really were no slow moments in this book, it was fantastic and I enjoyed it to the last page. I cannot wait for the next book to come out ... seriously, when does that happen??

Addendum: The third book in the Abandon series is entitled Awaken and is to be released sometime in 2013.

Completely unofficial Abandon Series Gossip: Disney purchased the rights to make this into a movie, but they are not moving forward with production at the moment. Does anyone know if this is fact or fiction?

Book Review: The Arrival

After finishing Variant last night, I needed something peaceful to read. Not sure if this qualifies, but Graphic Novels feel quiet to me. 

I was attracted to this book because of two things. First was the size, it is large and looks like it would be a picture book, but it belongs in the YA section of my library - so I was intrigued. The second thing that pulled me in was the cover. Not only is the cover art obviously fascinating, but the way they make the brand new book look a hundred years old is pretty awesome

I'm only one "chapter" in and I already feel connected with the characters, which means that the author/illustrator was doing his job. As someone who doesn't enjoy a lot of graphic novels, I like it when the characters pull me in from the first page. 

More updates to come, as long as I can read for a bit before falling asleep, I should be able to finish it this evening :)

So, I'm loving the book ... but I'm not sure I understand all of it. It needs Cliff's Notes :) However ... I think what we are seeing is how foreign things feel to someone who migrates into a country. The art in this book is truly phenomenal! What a great book to pull pages from and frame them! 

I'm not quite finished, but it really is good. The emotion in the pictures is so vivid that I do not miss the words that should accompany the art. Brilliant all the way around. I look forward to finishing it tonight. 

Book Review: Variant

This book was suggested to me by our amazing YA librarian Joan. It looks exciting and I'm starting it this morning, but I thought I'd start to tell you a little about it.

Trust No One ... that is always an exciting tag line! I love a great dystopian story and this one does not look like it will disappoint.

Here is the HarperTeen Summary: Benson Fisher thought that a scholarship to Maxfield Academy would be the ticket out of his dead-end life.

He was wrong.

Now he's trapped in a school that's surrounded by a razor-wire fence. A school where video cameras monitor his every move. Where there are no adults. Where the kids have split into groups in order to survive. 

Where breaking the rules equals death.

But when Benson stumbles upon the school's real secret, he realizes that playing by the rules could spell a fate worse than death, and that escape - his only real hope for survival - may be impossible.

How does that not sound fabulous????

Benson thought he was making an upward move to a better life by getting accepted to a super elite private school and getting away from Forster Families that were a mess. However, after only a day of his "new life" he is already wishing to go home. No one leaves, the rules are insane, and it is like whoever is in charge is playing with their lives.

Did anyone see that show, Persons Unknown? This book totally reminds me of that, but it is kids instead of adults. 

My thoughts so far are, what is going on? Who is in control? Why do they do crazy things? What happens when you go to detention? I have lots of questions, and the more I read, the more questions I have. Variant is turning out to be a thrilling read and I'm going to go and read some more :)

August 15th

Now that the olympics are over, maybe I'll finish a book!!

Things are beginning to be a little more routine for Benson, but there are still so many secrets. How are people dying? What happened in Jane first came? Why aren't they trying harder to leave??? I love not knowing, it makes the book SO much more exciting :) I'm ready for a sneak peak at what is going on though, I feel like I have more questions than answers and I am starting to get frustrated (much like Benson).  Hopefully Wells gives us (the reader) something soon!!! 

August 16th

FINISHED!

I stayed up late because once this book tells you one secret, you can't put it down! Little did I know while complaining yesterday, that I was a mere three pages from a shocking reveal! I sped through the last half of the book because I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep if I put it down - what was going to happen? Who would live? Who would die? Who was good? Who was bad?

Move this one to the top of your "to read" list immediately because it is that good ... but the ending is going to leave you hanging, so know that the sequel, Feedback, doesn't come out until October 2!

Book Review: The Iron Daughter

Having read The Iron King awhile ago, I keep meaning to come back to book #2 of the Iron Fey series and haven't had time. Until now! What I liked about book one: I loved the characters, I felt connected to them; Robbie/Robin/Puck is funny and fantastic; Meghan is strong and smart. What I didn't like, why is she falling in love with Ash when Robbie is so much the better choice (and I'm pretty sure he loves her back already!). Okay, that's enough recap, here is what I think so far:

The thing about a YA series book is that there tends to be no recap at the beginning to remind me of where we left off, so I actually read the first chapter twice to figure out what was going on and to remind myself who was who. Now, I'm not very far into the book, but Ash has already made her cry. Considering how much I "love" him already, this was not helping his cause any (even if I can assume why he did it). I can't quite feel the danger of the situation yet, but I am sure I will soon. She is a Summer Fey in the Winter Fey castle because she made an oath. At least the girl stands by her word.

July 27th

I feel a little neglectful. Not because I haven't been posting, but because I haven't been reading :( The book is good though. Poor Meghan with the "Ash drama of it all". Then Ash's brother has to be a giant jerk and give her that truth mushroom that nearly kills her. Glad things like "truth mushrooms" don't exist in real life, just to be on the safe side I don't eat mushrooms.

I'm only on the page 45 (I know, neglectful) and Ash has already been totally mean to Meghan twice ... to the point of breaking her heart. I realize he is a Winter Fey and things might be impossible between them, but he doesn't have to be such a jerk about it.

Such a speed read! This visually pleasing book is easy to speed through, but you'll want to go back more slowly and see what you've missed. Beautiful and confusing (thus the reason you'll want to pay more attention while you read). Glory is a piano prodigy who is miserable as her father moves her all over the world to play for sold out audiences.

However, her love for Frank is what keeps her going ... that and mixing "their song" into her concerts. As things move on, what is real, what isn't?

My question as I finish the book ... who is real?

This book was book talked by a fellow Librarian (we heart you Miss Jeri) and she recommended the app that accompanies this book.

This app is pretty awesome and gives the book so many added layers to the book. The additions of animation and music make this book so much better! I was a little disappointed to see that it hadn't gotten many great reviews, I just think that people were unsure what to expect and maybe thought it was a game. But if you like the book, or any interactive novels, you'll love this app.

Tonight I'm starting a new book (I know I'm reading "Beastly" right now, but I'm in a rut with it right now). 

I'm starting it while eating this delicious chocolate mug cake and relaxing :) What did you do today?

July 16th

So I finally really started the book ... I know it seemed like I started the book with the whole chocolate cake thing, but it wasn't really what happened (how do you eat cake and read at the same time?). 

Anywho, WOW is my comment! I love how this started. It is pretty visual, which I like, but so fast paced. I usually don't love when the chapters skip back and forth between two different characters, but I find myself loving both of them so much that I don't care if we leave one for the other.

My thoughts so far. I feel so badly for Amy. To be awake and having nightmares that whole time, it is horrifying. Then Elder has all the power, but doesn't get to use it. I love how he is so attracted to her red hair. So many books give me glimpses of "The Giver" and this one does as well. One person knows all of the answers (Eldest), but he isn't talking and the boy he is training is on a mission to find it all out! 

July 19th

Wow! This book sorta twisted my brain inside out (in a good way). You never know who should be trusted, what is really going on, what is the truth and what is a lie. The tag line of this book is, "What does it take to survive on a spaceship fueled by lies?" and it sums up this whole book! I loved it! The characters of Amy and Elder are brilliant and unique. I was only about half way through last night when I went to "read a little" before bed ... I ended up staying awake until 2:00am finishing! Once you got started figuring out one lie, you didn't want to put it down until you knew all of the answers.

Things I didn't like: It is sad to me that Amy is awake and her parents aren't. They didn't sum up the whole travel time issue (I'll leave it at that, as to not give anything away). Finally, there was a pretty disturbing near rape scene that made me feel sicky inside. Because of that, I would recommend this book for older teens. 

Overall this was a fantastic, unique read! Other than The Giver (that I already mentioned), there isn't another title to really compare it to. You must read it and tell me what you think.
